The Tomer Devorah writes that when many Jews join together to do a mitzva each person gets the reward of the others, that means if a person would just say tehilim themselves, they would get only their own reward, but here as a group each gets the reward of everyone else in the group.
Therefore the more people that join, the more reward each of us get for saying that one perek etc, and the more power our tehilim has.
